If you find yourself caught up in a dust storm, don't
panic, which can lead to erratic driving and poor decision-making. To get a
hold of the situation, turn on the radio and find a station issuing weather
reports about the storm, making it easier to gauge its severity; listen to
official advice from local authorities.
Before the Storm
If you have a chance to get to a safe place before a dust
storm strikes, do so. Sometimes, it may be possible to see a dust storm on the
horizon, making its way toward you. If so, pull off the highway as possible. If
it's not possible to immediately pull over, the National Weather Service
recommends driving at a "speed suitable for visibility," until you reach
a place to pull over.
Pulling Off the Road
In the event of a dust storm, it's important to pull off
to the side of the road and to not fight on, driving blindly through the dust.
If the storm is in full swing, slow down gradually and pull off the road. Once
safely on the side of the road, turn off all of the car's lights to prevent
another car from trying to follow you, causing a collision.
Getting Back on the Road
Before returning to the road, wait until you have at
least 300 feet of visibility. Heavy rainfall is common after dust storms,
according to Tucson News Now, so drive at a moderate speed and prepare for a
downpour.
