BUSNESS AND GUESTS

Dealing with visitors from other countries can be interesting and rewarding. If you organise your duties as host well and are ready to deal with the unexpected, you will be able to do good business too. Follow these simple tips to make a lasting impression.

* Research the background of your guests’ country and business customs so that you can make them comfortable.

* Never assume that your visitor will be able to converse effectively in English. Find out before he/she arrives if an interpreter is required and invest in the same.

* It is better to be excessively courteous rather than appear abrupt or patronising. It is nice to show them your city.

* Avoid jokes or humorous anecdotes involving religious topics even though these might be volunteered by your guest about his own religion. It can get offensive.

* At business lunches, when all the guests are present, it’s the duty of the host to “call the meal to order.” This can indicate that it is time to begin the meal and get down to business. Remember, the host sets the tone for the meal.

* Do thank your guest(s) as he or she departs with a handshake or a remark. And write to them later asking if they had a pleasant stay and thanking them for coming over.
