CHILD TRAFFICKG IN TAMIL NADU

June 21: The child trafficking racket in Tamil Nadu has become murkier with the Puducherry police busting a bogus delivery certificate scam run by a private hospital in Mudaliarpet here. The hospital issued the certificates to Lalitha, a purported human rights activist in Puducherry arrested by the Krishnagiri police recently in connection with the child trafficking racket.

According to the police, Mathiazhagan, 44, manager of the private hospital, was arrested Monday for allegedly issuing bogus delivery certificates to Lalitha stating that the babies were born in the hospital. The hospital had allegedly received Rs 2,000 from Lalitha for issuing a fake delivery certificate for a child.

The scam came to light after the police took Lalitha, who was lodged in the Vellore central prison, for a three-day custody on June 18 for interrogation in connection with the child trafficking incident.

The police found that Lalitha, in collusion with a private hospital in Puducherry, had issued fake delivery certificates to the Puducherry municipality and subsequently got birth certificates registered.

Police sources said two children rescued from Lalitha’s house in Puducherry did not have relevant documents. Lalitha had sourced the girl child Vidyabarathi from a Vijayawada-based couple and allegedly registered that she was born to her. She also sourced four more children, including a child born out of wedlock, and sold them to childless couples for Rs 1 lakh.

After interrogation, Lalitha was produced before a local court and remanded in custody in the Vellore central prison. The busting of the scam has brought to the fore the links the child trafficking gang had in Puducherry. The police suspect that the arrest of the hospital manager would be just the tip of the iceberg.
