Winning against all the odds

Seventeen-year-old Mohammed Gouse Jani made the headlines for topping the Eamcet this year but the boy did so in the face of tragedy and adversity. He scored an impressive 159 out of 160. What’s interesting though is the fact that educational institutions like the one he studied in, are extending their support in whatever way they can to deserving students, both on and off the campus.

Mohammed Gouse Jani — a young man in Muslim Thatichetlapalem in Visakhapatnam overcame personal tragedy and familial adversity to bring pride to his neighbourhood by topping the Eamcet examination. For Jani, the unexpected loss of his elder brother Feroze to disease was a harsh blow. It was just two weeks before his Inter exams were to begin. “I went into shock,” he recalls, adding, “but my teachers came home to counsel me.”

And aspirations were all this family had — Jani’s father, Ameer, runs an autorickshaw to earn Rs 6,000 per month. Jani was a bright student and studied on his own without the tuitions most of his classmates took. “I never sought help from teachers or friends while studying,” says Jani. Despite charging him Rs 12,000 in the first year, the college was so impressed with his performance, they waived his fees the next year. Expecting that he would rank in the top 10, the college teachers put Jani in an elite batch and began focussing on him.

“I spent most of my time in college and never felt the need to study at home. Two months before Eamcet, I moved to the hostel where I could concentrate better,” Jani says. He will now pursue ECE and later prepare for the civil services. He believes the Central services will give him a better opportunity to serve people.
