No matter what career path you follow, you will always face office politics. However, there are ways to avoid finding yourself in this trap.
* Don’t let the gossip mongers get you down. If someone asks you if you know what the latest story is, just say you don’t know and don’t want to know.
* Don’t get involved in conversations with constant whiners and those who act overtly sweet with you. Eventually, you will become a target.
* Learn who the power brokers are and try to stay on their good side. But be careful not to take sides and ruin your reputation.
* When you speak up and challenge others make sure you have the standing to do so. Respect yourself enough and make this perfectly clear to others too, so that you’re not taken for granted.
* Stay in contact with colleagues at other firms. It helps give you a reality check.
* Don’t mix your personal and professional life; colleagues may not always be good pals.
