EYE CARE

New Delhi, July 15: Our eyes are very delicate organs, and yet we subject them to various stresses on a daily basis. This includes wearing contact lenses, staring too long at the computer and TV, and even rubbing them when they feel itchy.

And if you are a contact lens wearer, you may experience symptoms of sensitive eyes even more often when you do not care for your eyes properly, which makes eye care even more important to preserve the health of your eyes.

If you are an allergy-sufferer, chances of you developing sensitive eyes will also be higher. If you do not observe proper care while wearing contact lenses, you will be more prone to developing sensitive eyes too.

How to preserve your eye health
Make sure you keep your peepers in tip-top shape, with these eye-care tips from Bausch + Lomb:

- Do not rub your eyes, even if they feel itchy and sensitive. Rubbing may damage your cornea or even cause bacterial infection.

- Keep a safe distance from the television. The TV should be lower than your eye level. Tone down the brightness of your television.

- Always swim with your googles on.

- Wear shades or a broad hat to avoid bright sunlight when you're outdoors.

- Blink your eyes often! Staring at the comupter monitor reduces your blinking rate, leading to dry eyes.

Care tips for sensitive eyes

If you already are suffering from sensitive eyes, keep in mind these three tips to minimise injury or discomfort to your eyes:

1) Run. When your eyes are feeling uncomfortable, leave the place that you are in immediately.

2) Protect your eyes from allergens. Allergens can come from the make-up we wear, so put on contact lenses and remove them before applying or removing make-up. This will reduce the probability of having foreign matter from your make-up coming into contact with your eyes

- Wear shades to prevent allergens from coming into contact with your eyes.

- Ventilate any newly furbished room, as paint and furniture often carry elements that can cause 'sensitive eyes' condition.

3) Use lens lubricants. Lens lubricants moisturise eyes but choose an eye-drop solution that's suitable for contact lens users. That's because certain ingredients can irritate your eyes.

Keep your eyes in peak condition with these steps

- Exercise your eye balls! Rotate them up, down, left, right for 5 seconds in each direction. This helps to ease tired eyes.

- Consume more vegetables and fruit. Dark green vegetables help replenish nutirents for your eyes, blood vessels and nerves.

- Get regular eye-checks and choose suitable contact lens. For astigmatism patients, please use toric lenses to correct your vision.
