June 26: Tamil Nadu government should enact a law mandating that all the computer manufacturers should install Tamil software in their PCs before putting them on sale, Dr M. Anandakrishnan, former vice-chancellor of the Anna University and chairman of the Tamil IT conference (2010) said here. Participating in a function where prizes were given away to students who had taken part in various competitions held on the sidelines of the Tamil IT conference, which is part of the World Classical Tamil Conference, Dr Anandakrishnan said in countries like China and Korea, computer manufactures load software in Mandarin and Korean so that even those who are ‘English-illiterate’ could use them.
“Union textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran too expressed his concern about lack of Tamil software in computers being sold in our state. And so I request you (deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin on the dais) to get a law enacted mandating all computer manufacturers to install Tamil software in the computers being sold by them in Tamil Nadu,” he said. The eminent academician also lamented that of the one-lakh thesis submitted by the university and college students, less than a hundred are in Tamil and are Tamil IT related.
“The number of thesis in Tamil has to increase to at least 10,000 in the coming years. I also request the state government to allocate space for International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil at Fort St. George where the Central Institute of Classical Tamil will soon have its office,” he said.
